Dermot Healy

Biography

Dermot Healy (1947-2014) was born  in Finea, Co Westmeath but grew up in Cavan town where his mother owned the Milseanacht Bhreifne café on Main Street. Healy became one of Ireland’s foremost writers and won the Hennessy award in 1974 and 1976. He was shortlisted for the Poetry Now award for his poetry collection ‘a Fool’s Errand’ in 2011. He was editor of Drumlin magazine which was published from 1978 until 1980. The idea to publish a magazine covering short stories, poetry, photographs, and historical events from counties Cavan, Leitrim and Monaghan was first voiced by Phil Lawlor who in turn edited the magazine from 1990 until 1997. Drumlin magazine was well received and gave an opportunity to published and unpublished writers at a time when it was difficult for new writing to get published.
